So what exactly is On-Page SEO? 

On Page SEO means optimizing your website for search engines and users. Some common practices include optimizing title tags, content, internal links, and URLs. 

On Page SEO is really important, in fact, Google’s own “How Search Works” report states that they still use old school stuff like looking for a specific keyword on your page. 

And it is data backed too. You can see it whenever you search for a keyword, the top three sites all use almost the exact keyword in their title tag. 

But there’s a lot more to On Page SEO than keywords stuffing, like User experience, Bounce Rate and Dwell Time, Search Intent, Page loading speed, Click-through-rate and others. 

Now that you know why On Page SEO matters, how exactly do we optimize content for SEO? You’re going to learn how to implement the on Page SEO strategies in this chapter, Starting from keywords. First step is, using your keyword in the first 100 words. This is important to do because Google puts more weight on terms that show up early in your page. 

Second is using your Title as an H1 tag.

H1 tag helps Google understand the structure of the page and acts as a mini title tag. If you’re using a content management system like WordPress, you don’t need to worry about this since they already set up an H1 tag. If that’s not the case, you can easily set up an H1 tag in tbe source code by yourself. 

Third is using an H2 tag for your subheadings.

You should include your target keyword in at least one subheading using an H2 tag. It can make a minor dent in your SEO rankings. 

Next is Keyword Frequency. It simply means how many times a keyword appears in your content. If a page mentions a keyword it wants to rank for, a bunch of times, then that proves that it’s content is about that keyword only and Google can be more confident about that page’s topic.

However one shouldn’t go overboard and indulge in keyword stuffing, which can seriously harm your SEO efforts. 

Use External (Outbound) Links. 

External links are links to related pages in your niche which helps Google figure something out the topic of your page. 

It is a good practice to link to high Authority pages in your domain, which shows Google that you’re a good source of information for the users and can lead to increased rankings.

Next, Optimize Your URLs for SEO. 

URLs are an underrated part of on page SEO. Here’s how you can create SEO friendly URLs. Have a short and easy to read URL and put a keyword in your URLs. Now you’ll learn to optimize your title and meta descriptions, which can help a lot with your rankings. 

Having good title tags helps Google to get to know more about your website and meta descriptions help in increasing the click-through rate.  First step is front loading the title tag.

Title tag is one of the most important on-page SEO factors. 

It helps Google get more information about your site. If your title has a keyword at the start, it gives more weight to that keyword. Therefore the closer your title is to the front of your title tag, the better. 

Words like best, guide, masterclass are really great for increasing click through rate. You can use these words to rank for long tailed versions of your keyword. 

Now about Meta descriptions. 

Google’s Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide recommends that you write your own meta descriptions. 

Because a good meta description acts as an overview to the site and can help in increasing the click through rate of your site. It is time to talk about Content now. 

Writing good content, along with Backlinks, forms the backbone of SEO. To rank well in search results, your content needs to be Unique, And super valuable to the search users. 

Here are three ways you can achieve that. 

First off is unique content.

Unique content doesn’t just mean having no duplicate content on your site. It means publishing something that has never been published before, or something which is really better and valuable than the existing content on the net. 

Your content has to bring something new to the table. It can be a new tip or strategy, a better list of curated resources, Strong design and UX New case study, Streamlined step-by-step process etc. 

Second is having Valuable Content. 

About four million blog posts come out every single day. So if your content wants to stand out, it needs to provide a lot of value to the users. It needs to be super valuable. You can do that by writing unique content, and also by adding images, screenshots, and steps to make it easy for someone to put your content into practice.

Last bit is having content that satisfies Search Intent. 

Unique, valuable content can get you to the first page of Google. But if you want to stay there, your page has to satisfy Search Intent. In other words, Your page has to be exactly what a Google searcher wants. Otherwise, your page will likely be buried on the 3rd page.

Use Question title tags. 

Question based title tags have an above average click through rate, according to a recent study. Therefore it is advisable to use question title tags, whenever possible. 

Second step is to Fill In Missing Meta Descriptions. 

We’ve talked about meta descriptions before. Just having a meta description can get you 6% more clicks than having pages with missing meta descriptions. 

Do a site audit and fill in the pages with missing meta descriptions. 

Another thing is to have scheme markup on your site. 

It doesn’t directly affect your SEO, but Schema MarkUp can enable rich snippets which provide additional information to the users and can increase your click-through rate. You can double check if you have your Schema set up correctly using the Structured Data Testing Tool. 

Use power power words in your Meta Descriptions and Title Tags. 

Using emotionally-charged “Power Words” decreased click through rate by 12%.

Another little hack is Adding the Current Year to Title and Description as it gives the signal to the users that your content is up-to-date. 

Now let’s talk about some on page user experience signals. 

UX Signals are how Google Searchers interact with your content. Some of the examples of UX signals are Dwell time, bounce rate among others. Google does pay attention to these signals so it is important that these are optimized. 

Here’s how you can do that. 

First of all, push your content above the fold. 

People want fast answers, which is why it’s important to avoid having massive images at the start of the page. 

Instead put your headline and introduction front-and-center. 

Make your content super easy to skim. 

Most people don’t read the full texts, they only skim through the important parts. Therefore it is important to make your content according to the rules. 

Here’s how you can make your content easy to skim. 

Add lots of subheadings, bullets, images and build an active community. Having an active community is really great because people are interested in reading comments on the post to get more opinions and context to the post itself. Hence it can have a good time effect on the bounce rate. 

Let’s talk about some Advanced On-Page SEO Tips and strategies now. 

First off, Use Original images. 

According to a recent study, it was found that stock images actually hurt your SEO efforts. Therefore try to have as many original pictures instead of stock images on your website. 

Next up is Internal Linking. 

Internal linking is really important for SEO. You can use internal linking to boost up your lesser Performing pages by Internal linking them to high Authority pages on your website. It’s also important to use keyword-rich anchor text. 

You can also use an SEO tool like Ahrefs to bring up the pages on your site with the most link authority.  Then, add a few internal links from those pages to a high-priority page on your site. 

Talking about Content. 

A post has a much higher chance of ranking well on Google if it is comprehensive and covers all the aspects of a topic.  You can do that with the help of LSI keywords. LSI keywords are synonyms which Google uses to determine a page’s relevancy. 

You can also rank your content in featured snippets. It can have a huge impact on your click through rate. However there’s a catch, you already need to be on the first page, to make it to featured snippets. 

If you’re already on the first page, you need to optimize your content to rank in the Featured Snippet. So if you see a “definition” Featured Snippet, then you want to include a short definition in your content. 

If it’s a list of steps or tips, then you want to make sure that your page structure is consistent. Some other advanced strategies are Optimizing Page Speed, Visual Search and Voice search.
